Understanding Milia and What Causes Milia

What is Milia?
What causes milia are small, white, cyst-like bumps that appear on the skin, often resembling whiteheads. what causes milia is dead skin cells become trapped in tiny pockets just beneath the skin’s surface. Unlike acne, which is caused by clogged pores and bacteria, milia form due to the build up of keratin, a protein found in the skin’s outer layer.
Milia are typically small, ranging in size from 1 to 2 millimetres, and are usually painless and harmless. They can appear as individual bumps or in clusters and are commonly found on the face, especially around the eyes, cheeks, and nose. However, milia can also occur on other parts of the body.
There are 3 types of milia:
Primary Milia: These are the most common and what causes milia of this kind is typically when keratin becomes trapped in a small pocket of skin. They often appear in newborns but can also develop in adults. Â
Secondary Milia: These develop as a result of skin damage or trauma, such as burns, blistering conditions, or the use of certain skin care products that clog pores.
Milia en Plaque: What causes milia en plaque is a rare form of milia that appears as larger, more prominent bumps on a patch of skin.

What Causes Milia?
Milia occurs when excess keratin, a protein naturally found in the skin, nails, and hair, becomes trapped beneath the skin's surface. This build up forms small, whiteheads known as "milk spots." While commonly seen in newborns, where they typically disappear within a few weeks, milia can also develop in adults. The exact cause of adult milia is not fully understood, but it can be linked to skin damage, aging, or heavy skincare products.
